Exceed + Skytear = <3

Dear gamer,

Skytear is becoming Season 8 of Exceed... on Gamefound soon!

I’ve wanted to write this newsletter for a while but we've been too busy wrapping up our 2 recents projects: Dicequest and Onward: Twisted (late pledges for Twisted are still open btw).

The Exceed Skytear season was announced about 1 month ago elsewhere... and since then a couple of Gamefound comments already captured the mood we're aiming for:

  • “Oh god, my two obsessions are combining? This is the best”

Or even:

  • “THE DREAM! Two of my Top 5 games combined for the ultimate Voltron of gaming. Thank you!”

So what is Exceed?

It is a 20-minute fighting card game from Level 99 Games.

It’s been around for years, with each season bringing a new roster of fighters into the same tight 1v1 system.

If you’ve never played it, think of it as a fighting video game translated into cards: spacing, timing, big reads, and the occasional deeply unfair-looking move that was, technically, your fault.

It's one of my favorite 1v1 game, truly. This whole thing started at Essen SPIEL in 2024, in a meeting with Brad from Level 99, and it slowly turned into one of those rare projects that checks a real personal dream off the list.

The most useful thing you can do today is follow the Gamefound page.

It helps the launch a lot, and you can also sign up there for the all-in giveaway.

Some more details

Exceed: Skytear is officially licensed and made with Level 99.

They made the initial design, using their years of Exceed expertise, then shaped it around Skytear lore and our heroes. After that, we took over refinement and development.

The season includes 16 Skytear heroes... in case you are curious:
Akimo, Astryda, Doomies, Gulbjarn, Heraal, Ixatosk, Khenui, Khepiax, Kohai, Miyuki, Nantaca, Shafathi, Shaidrus, Vorhild, Yami, and Zacoal.

Yes, Ixatosk. You read that right. We looked at the emotionless green Skytear construct and said: “please make this work in a 1v1 fighting system.”

The season also brings a new area control mechanic, because Skytear without fighting over space would feel suspicious.

You can play it standalone, or mix and match it with any past Exceed season.

There’s one more thing we’re especially proud of: Exceed: Skytear is the first Exceed season with an official solo mode.

It’s designed by Mike Kelley from One Stop Co-Op Shop, which is about as good a sentence as we could hope to write for that feature.

Right now the game is waiting on manufacturing quotes and more playtesting before launch. We don’t want to rush that part. It’s where good ideas become actual cards people can argue about at the table.

Playtesting starts on June 9.

If you want to help us sand this down, join Discord, get the Exceed playtester role, and we’ll notify you when testing opens:

Please follow the Gamefound page if you want to see this happen.

That little click matters (to our morale ;)) more than it looks.
Thank you!
